A short trip south out of Rotorua takes you to the Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland, a site of intense geo-thermal activity. Here you can walk around a tiny portion of the site on gently cordoned off paths and experience the sights and smells of the demonicly named craters.

All labeled with names and numbers on the fences as if sometime lives there. “Do pop round for tea sometime, I’m at number 22, Devils Inkwell. The kettle is always on, in fact, I can’t turn it off.”

My top tip for photographing steam? Get something dark in the background and the constrast makes the steam more visible. And don’t forget to breathe deeply. Mmmmm, odorous.
